Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

Friday, January 1st, 2021 – 4:00 PM E.T. at AT&T Stadium

The Rose Bowl features the two schools that participated in the 2013 BCS National Championship. The Alabama Crimson Tide was a heavy favorite against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish that year and creamed their foe 42-14. This game has a massive 20-point line on it, and it's more than possible that this game turns out the same way.

Not much has changed for either program over the last seven seasons. Notre Dame is constantly battling to catch up to the programs that have access to better athletes, and occasionally like this season, they have a strong enough roster and quarterback to compete. But it won't matter because the three other competitors in this playoff are vastly more dynamic and explosive.

It's unfortunate we can be so sure already that Notre Dame has no chance to win the entire playoff. Ian Book is a nice quarterback who has NFL talent, but he's also the worst starter of the three future others, who are also on more loaded offenses. There might be one Notre Dame starting offensive player who would start on either Alabama, Clemson, or Ohio State right now.

Alabama isn't flawless, and Book will be able to find some passing lanes over the middle to his stud target, Javon McKinley. But it's not a star-studded unit, and relying on short passes, and the run game rarely works against the Tide. It's hard to envision the Irish being able to reach the end zone more than twice.

That won't be enough to even cover against the Tide. Mac Jones and Najee Harris lead an insanely good unit that also has a Heisman Trophy frontrunner in Devonta Smith at receiver. The Irish won't be able to sit in man or zone comfortably because they have to respect Harris' ability on the ground.

Without the A-plus athletes needed to run with the Tide, the Irish will again suffer a national embarrassment as we await the eventual expansion of the college football playoff. So for this bet, I'll take the Tide to cover. 20 points is a lot, but also reasonable based on the limitations of the Irish and their history of falling short against teams with more athletes than themselves.

Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Clemson Tigers

Friday, January 1st, 2021 - 7:00 PM E.T. at Mercedes-Benz Superdome

The matchup everyone wants to see is the rematch of Ohio State and Clemson. The Buckeyes should've won their battle last year en route to a face-off with LSU, but squandered away the game from mistakes, bad calls, and missed opportunities. But the 6-0 Buckeyes have struggled enough for oddsmakers to give Clemson a big seven-point number.

After seeing every snap for both teams this season, I agree with the number. Ohio State hasn't had time to really fight off some bad habits and find their depth, causing developmental issues on both sides of the ball. There's a good reason why Justin Fields hasn't been as good as last year, and it's not because he was overrated or stinks.

The reality is that the Buckeyes haven't established their depth beyond Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave at receiver. Both have combined for almost all of their receiving production despite Olave missing their last game. Olave is back this week, but Fields hasn't built the chemistry needed with a bunch of young receivers that rotate in, leaving him in the pocket unsure of where to go when coverage is tight.

College

It'll help the Buckeyes to have their running game humming, at least. Trey Sermon and Master Teague are solid but unspectacular backs. If they can combine for over 150 yards rushing, the Buckeyes can absolutely win. Their efficiency and ability to break off chunk gains will be critically important to the result of this showdown.

The other dimension where the Buckeyes must show improvement is on defense. Trevor Lawrence has been fantastic much of the year, and he will find big plays against this troubled Ohio State secondary. The Buckeyes haven't shown the level of discipline needed at cornerback to win against Lawrence.

He's been so good at finding chunk plays on intermediate and deep throws this year that it's hard to see the Buckeyes suddenly figuring it out at the safety position and stopping the devastating passing attack. It's not the Buckeyes' secondary from 2019, and it shows that they miss both Chase Young and Jeff Okudah on the unit.

For my NCAAF picks, I see Clemson winning a competitive game, but one they're comfortable in throughout. The talent disparity isn't large, but the experience is and what we've seen on the field has been a major separating factor.
